CAS Dr. Tuimur Commissions projects in LVNWWDA

The CAS Ministry of Water, Sanitation & Irrigation Dr. Andrew Tuimur on the 1st March and 2nd March 2021 visited Vihiga and Nandi Counties respectively to launch and inspect completed and ongoing projects.

While in Vihiga County the CAS oversaw the handing over of the Chambiti Secondary Borehole Water Supply Project to the school and P.A.G Gimarakwa Primary School Borehole Water Project in Gimarakwa Sub-County. The projects are expected to serve the respective schools and members of the community with water for domestic, institutional and livestock use.

During his visit to Nandi County the CAS oversaw the handing over of the Kurgung Boys Secondary School Water Project to the school and inspected the construction of the Kapchemosin – Kaboi Community Water Project, the projects are expected to server about 900 people mainly student and about 8,000 people respectively with potable, clean and adequate water.

Dr. Andrew Tuimur said, “685 projects are ongoing in the whole country and so far 60% of the population in Kenya have access to water and by 2022 we expect to be at 80% coverage while eyeing for 100% water coverage by 2030.”

He said that the provisions of water had played a big part in prevention of diseases because of sanitization so moving forward every new project should incorporate elements of sanitization.

Lake Victoria North Water Works Development Agency Chairman Mr. Julius Bakasa Wasike urged schools where the project were constructed to go a step further and share the water with the surrounding communities as a form of showing togetherness since it will go a long way in providing security to the schools.

The Chambiti Secondary Borehole Water Supply Project construction cost was Ksh3,980,000.00 and it entailed Installation of a solar pumping system complete with pumping unit, construction of one borehole chamber and fencing with chain link and barbed wire a perimeter of 70m Long, Supply and installation of 10m3 plastic tank on 10m high elevated steel tower, laying of the rising main and distribution Pipeline totaling to a total length 220m of 25 mm Diameter HDPE pipes, construction of three communal water points complete with pipe work and all fittings and construction of valve chambers and wash out chambers complete with all connections.

The Equipping of P.A.G Gimarakwa Primary School Borehole Water Project cosof t Ksh4,526,885 and entailed, installation of Solar Power Hybrid System and Submersible Pump, supply and Installation of 24m3 Plastic Tank on Elevated Steel Tower, putting up four Communal Water Points, rising Main from the Borehole to Elevated Tank (72m long), distribution Line to of 142m long and installing HDPE Distribution Pipeline to St Maurice Dangana Secondary School 70m long, in Nandi county.

The construction of Kurgung Boys Secondary School Water Project on the other hand cost cost Ksh 2.9 million and it involved installation of submersible pumping set powered by a hybrid of solar power system and connection to national electricity grid, supplying and installation of 24m3 plastic tank on 12m high elevated steel tower, laying of 300m long, pipeline rising main from the sump to the elevated tank, laying of 245m long, distribution pipeline from the elevated tank, construction of 2 Communal water points, rehabilitation works on existing pipe network, supplying, installation  and construction of precast concrete culvert sump 3 meters in depth  and the construction of valve chambers & fittings installation.

The construction of Kapchemosin – Kaboi Community Water Project cost Ksh18.9 million and it involved construction of a Pump house and installation of pumping units powered by national electricity grid, construction of 50m3 masonry sump, laying of 700m, 63mm diameter HDPE pipeline rising main from the 50m3 masonry sump to 100m3 elevated pressed steel tank, supplying, fabrication  and construction of 100m3 pressed steel tank on 12m high steel tower, laying of 2.286km long, 63mm diameter HDPE pipeline from 100m3 elevated pressed steel tank to Kapchemosin Primary School, laying of 2000m long, 63mm diameter HDPE pipeline 100m3 elevated pressed steel tank to Kamarich direction, laying of 1300m long, 63mm diameter HDPE pipeline from the offtake junction to Salma Direction, construction of three standard water kiosk and construction of three communal water points each at Kapchemosin Primary School, Kiptulus Secondary School and Kaboi Primary School.

Lake Victoria North Water Works Development Agency (LVNWWDA) serves six counties in the Western and part of North Rift regions of Kenya with an estimated population of about 6.5 million people.
