A fresh start: Zinash is fighting for a better future for herself and her children

May 5, 2025

After her husband died, Zinash faced overwhelming challenges in raising her children. Struggling to make ends meet, she turned to commercial sex work, a decision that left her feeling empty and disconnected from her children. “I was a commercial sex worker for four years. I would go to people’s homes to wash clothes during the day and do sex work at night,” she recalls. Despite earning money, her life spiraled into addiction to alcohol and khat (a stimulant drug), and she felt no joy or connection with her children.

With support from ChildFund and its local partners Future Hope Integrated Development Organization, who gave her start-up capital and equipment, Zinash was able to launch her own business. Through training, she also learned how to offer responsive, positive parental care, which has allowed her to create a loving and stable environment for her children. Now, with a steady income from her business, Zinash has left her past behind, creating a brighter future for her family. Watch the video below to hear more about Zinash’s inspiring journey and how she is transforming her life, and the lives of her children.

In 2024, ChildFund Ethiopia allocated 83% of its total operating expenses to programs supporting vulnerable children, families, and communities.
