Driving Community Action to Achieve Zero Hunger and Build Resilient Livelihoods

Food insecurity remains a critical challenge in Ethiopia, driven by a combination of conflict, environmental shocks, and economic instability, undermining the health, safety, and development of children and their families. As of 2023, over 20.1 million Ethiopians needed food assistance (OCHA, 2023), and more than 4 million children are acutely malnourished, with some regions experiencing emergency levels of food insecurity.

Conflict in parts of Ethiopia and prolonged droughts in the south and east have displaced millions, disrupted agricultural production, and decimated livelihoods. Limited access to food and income forces vulnerable households, particularly women and girls, into harmful coping mechanisms, including child marriage, trafficking, transactional sex, and school dropout, further perpetuating cycles of poverty and inequality.

ChildFund is working to change this reality. Our programs directly address hunger and poverty by improving food production, boosting household incomes, and building long-term resilience. We support families to grow more food, access markets, and improve their capacity to provide for their children without resorting to harmful survival strategies. We take an integrated, community-driven approach, recognizing that food security and financial stability are inseparable. Our interventions are tailored to the evolving needs of families and young people, especially in times of crisis, ensuring that children are not just surviving, but thriving.

Our Approach

ChildFund tackles the underlying issues of food insecurity through a multifaceted strategy, aiming to create lasting solutions rather than temporary relief. Our programs are designed to equip families with the tools, skills, and resources they need to build sustainable livelihoods. We focus on

We work with smallholder farmers to enhance food security and strengthen sustainable livelihoods. By providing essential agricultural inputs, including improved maize, wheat, haricot beans, teff, vegetable and fruit seeds, and fertilizer, we help families increase food production and reduce their vulnerability to hunger. Our programs promote nutrition-sensitive agriculture, which has shown positive impacts on the health and well-being of children, pregnant women, and lactating mothers. Vegetable production and consumption habits have significantly improved among target households, contributing to better dietary diversity. Learn more.

ChildFund’s Natural Resource Management (NRM) programs focus on the sustainable use and restoration of ecosystems to enhance environmental resilience and support rural livelihoods. Key interventions include the provision and planting of forest and fruit tree seedlings, afforestation activities, and the establishment and management of area closures to promote natural regeneration and biodiversity conservation.
The program also promotes the adoption of alternative energy solutions, such as energy-efficient stoves and biogas systems, to reduce pressure on forest resources, lower household fuel consumption, and improve indoor air quality. All activities are implemented with community participation and aligned with national environmental policies, contributing to long-term sustainability and resilience of natural resource systems. We support the establishment and strengthening of Village Savings and Loans Associations (VSLAs) to enhance household financial resilience and inclusion. VSLAs enable community members, especially women, to save regularly, access small loans, and invest in income-generating activities. To improve security, transparency, and efficiency, we integrate digital platforms into savings and lending processes. These technologies help members track savings, manage transactions, and connect with formal financial services where available. VSLAs contribute to improved financial literacy, better resource management, and the ability of families to absorb economic shocks such as illness, crop failure, or loss of income.

We offer vocational and technical skills development for youth and adults, preparing them for employment and entrepreneurship. Our programs link participants to training centers and apprenticeships that align with market demands, helping them compete in Ethiopia’s evolving economy. Learn More.

We provide targeted cash support to vulnerable families to meet immediate needs while investing in longer-term income-generating activities. We also train and mentor youth and caregivers in business skills, helping them launch and grow small enterprises.

From waste to wealth: Transforming livelihoods through recycling in Addis Ababa

In Addis Ababa, where over 2,000 tons of waste are generated daily, plastic waste management has become a growing challenge. This issue is further compounded by limited funding for public health services and weak enforcement of environmental regulations. At the same time, unemployment rates remain high, particularly among women, with 26.4% of women unemployed compared to 12.2% of men.
However, a transformative initiative is offering a solution. One that not only addresses waste management but also creates economic opportunities for communities. Implemented by ChildFund in partnership with Addis Integrated Development Organization and supported by Dow Chemical, this project is supporting communities to turn plastic waste into a source of income. Through training and awareness campaigns, residents are adopting waste segregation practices and preparing plastic waste for recycling. Watch this video to learn more
