Children's voices - The impact of conflict on children’s education in Kobo, Amhara region
May 7, 2025
After more than two years of war, calm has returned to northern Ethiopia’s Afar, Amhara and Tigray regions.
Schools are reopening and children are trickling back to class. This primary school in Kobo District, Amhara Region, finally reopened its doors to children last November 2022, after closing in July 2021.
Unfortunately, the school which was caught in the crossfire and used as a camp by both warring forces is in shambles. Classrooms were bombed, roofs were blown off, class walls are scarred by bullet holes, furniture was broken, some used as firewood by soldiers to cook, water pipelines were destroyed, sanitation and hygiene facilities were damaged, libraries were set ablaze, and electrical installations were damaged. Wanton destruction.
